ARE YOU READY FOR THE TOEFL?
WHAT IS THE TOEFL?
TOEFL is an acronym that stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language. It measures your proficiency in the English language in an academic context. Most universities and colleges in the US and Canada require you to take the TOEFL test if you want to apply for a place to study there. In most countries the TOEFL is a computer-based test (CBT), this means you have to follow instructions on a screen and answer questions interactively. The TOEFL test consists of the following disciplines: reading, listening and writing. If you want to score high marks in all three sections, you need an extensive vocabulary.
THE TOEFL SCORE IS USED BY :
Admissions offices, deans and similar decision makers
Administrators of licensing and certification agencies
Administrators of government agencies
Individuals who plan to study in an England
What IS TOEFL PBT ?
The TOEFL PBT Test is a paper-based test that measures your ability to use and understand English in a classroom setting at the college or university level. It accurately measures how well you can listen, read and write English while performing academic tasks. The PBT TOEFL® test comprises three sections plus a 30-minute writing test (the Test of Written English.
Comprehension measures the ability to understand English
Structure and Language measures the ability to recognise standard English
Reading Comprehension measures the ability to understand reading matter in English
Writing Skill measures you ability to write easy in English.
The raw score for each section is converted by statistical means to a number on what is called the TOEFL test scale. The total paper-based test score is reported on a scale that ranges from 310 to 680.
WHAT IS TOEFL IBT?
The Internet-based Test (iBT) was introduced to other countries throughout 2006, and is now available at Vancouver English Centre. The iBT tests all four language skills that are important for effective communication: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The curriculum of our TOEFL Preparation Program has been adapted to help you prepare for either the Computer-based Test or the Internet-based Test.
PREPARATORY
Preparing for that TOEFL exam means the student has to have some preparation in knowing some key phrases before he applies for the test. Students should be prepared to answer question not only on what is being asked directly, or what is the supporting information for a argument, he should also be prepared to answer what was being inferred in a conversation.
So there may be a moment where the CD may play a discourse between a student and an academic adviser and the latter gets rhetorical over what the student says. The language learner has to know how to interpret that rhetorical statement.
